Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Where can I watch fireworks festivals in Tokyo for free?
Adachi Fireworks, the Sumida River Fireworks Festival, the Katsushika Noryo Fireworks Festival, the Edogawa Fireworks Festival, the Hachioji Fireworks Festival, the Tamagawa Fireworks Festival, Kita City Fireworks, Chofu Fireworks, and the Ome City Noryo Fireworks Festival have free viewing areas. However, please note that the Itabashi Fireworks Festival will charge admission for all areas starting in 2026.
When do tickets for paid seats go on sale?
It varies by event, but generally sales start 1–3 months before the date. STAR ISLAND goes on sale in early March, Adachi Fireworks in late April, and the Jingu Gaien Fireworks Festival in late June. Popular events sell out early, so check the official website for on-sale dates and purchase as soon as possible.
What happens in case of rain?
Many fireworks festivals are canceled in severe weather and generally proceed in light rain. The Sumida River Fireworks Festival and Jingu Gaien Fireworks Festival are postponed to the following day, while the Adachi Fireworks and Tamagawa Fireworks Festival are canceled without postponement. The decision on the day will be announced on each event’s official website or social media.
Are there fireworks festivals that families with children can enjoy?
Events with paid seating are recommended for families with small children, as you don’t need to reserve spots and can watch comfortably. In particular, STAR ISLAND offers all chair seating, and the Tokyo Racecourse Fireworks have ample space on the grounds. Bringing earmuffs to protect children’s ears is also recommended.
What should I bring to a fireworks festival?
A picnic sheet, insect repellent, mobile battery, trash bags, drinks, a towel, and a folding chair (if allowed at the venue) are useful. Riverbank venues have little shade, so sunscreen and a hat are also reassuring to have. And don’t forget to top up your transit IC card for the trip home.
Do you have any tips for avoiding crowds?
Using paid seats, walking from a station one or two stops away instead of the nearest one, or starting to leave before the finale are effective strategies. Since the crowds on the way home are especially heavy, it's also recommended to kill some time at the venue for about 30 minutes to an hour after the event ends before heading out.

Summary

In Tokyo in 2026, from STAR ISLAND in May to the Tokyo Bay Grand Fireworks Festival in October, a wide variety of fireworks festivals will be held from spring through autumn. From traditional downtown festivals to the latest entertainment fused with music and technology, each offers its own unique appeal.

Tickets for paid seats tend to sell out early, especially for popular events, so we recommend checking early for any festivals that interest you. Dates, times, and details are subject to change, so be sure to check the official websites of each festival for the latest information before you go out.

We hope this article helps you enjoy a fireworks festival that becomes a memorable part of your summer in 2026.
