"The Louvre Museum Exhibition: Renaissance"
At The National Art Center, Tokyo, "The Louvre Museum Exhibition: Renaissance" is being held through Sunday, December 13. Focusing on Renaissance art that developed across Europe from the 15th to the 16th centuries, this exhibition introduces the rich and complex characteristics of the period through 56 works selected from the collection of the Louvre Museum.
This exhibition spotlights Leonardo da Vinci, the artist who symbolizes the Renaissance, and presents works under four themes: "Travel," "Innovation and Refinement of Technique," "Looking to Antiquity," and "The Rise of Portraiture." In addition to paintings, visitors can see a wide variety of works, including sculpture, prints, drawings, and decorative arts.
Highlights of the Exhibition
Leonardo da Vinci’s "Portrait of a Woman" shown in Japan for the first time
At this exhibition, Leonardo da Vinci’s "Portrait of a Woman," mistakenly given the alternative title "La Belle Ferronnière," will be unveiled in Japan for the first time.
An oil painting created around 1490–1497, it is a masterpiece of portraiture that symbolizes the heightened interest in human individuality during the Renaissance.
Introducing Renaissance art through four themes
The display is organized around four themes: "Travel," "Innovation and Refinement of Technique," "Looking to Antiquity," and "The Rise of Portraiture."
From the reevaluation of ancient Greek and Roman culture to exchanges among artists and the development of techniques, visitors can learn about Renaissance art from multiple perspectives.
