An art spot where you can experience a fantastical world woven by light and sound
[Mori Building Digital Art Museum:
Epson teamLab Borderless]
Located on the first basement floor of Azabudai Hills in Minato City, Tokyo, and offering excellent access from the city center, the “Mori Building Digital Art Museum: Epson teamLab Borderless” provides a completely new art experience. With the concept “In one borderless, continuous world, wander, explore, and discover,” it creates a world of art that flows and transforms freely without setting boundaries between work and work, people and works, or viewers and space.
This museum is not merely a place to “look”; by walking, touching, and feeling, the works change, and you yourself become part of them — an experiential space.
In this relocated and renewed venue, in addition to popular works carried over from the former site (Odaiba), many new works have been added, ensuring there is something new to discover each time you visit.
3 recommended points
1. An experience of walking through a borderless “labyrinth of art”
The greatest appeal of Epson teamLab Borderless is that the boundaries between works and space, between people and art, completely melt away. Inside the museum, luminous works drawn across walls, floors, and ceilings constantly change, responding to the movements and presence of visitors.
The works are not fixed to individual rooms; they move over time, intersecting with others to create new vistas. In this space with no map or set route, the serendipitous encounter of 「what will appear next」 becomes part of the experience itself. True to the name “Borderless”, you feel as if you are walking through an endless labyrinth of art.
2. A world of “moving light” created by cutting-edge technology
Although teamLab’s works are created using the latest digital technology, at their core they are art that explores the relationship with human senses and the body. In the representative work 《Bubble Universe: 光の球体結晶、ぷるんぷるんの光、環境が生む光 - ワンストローク》, countless luminous spheres inhabit the space; when a person pauses near a sphere, light and sound propagate continuously from the nearest sphere to the next nearest, as if tracing a single-stroke line.
In 《マイクロコスモス:ぷるんぷるんの光、環境が生む光》, countless lights race on through a space of indeterminate depth. Each sphere cannot generate all the light on its own; it exists within a relational system where other spheres become the environment that gives rise to light. The viewers’ movements and perception shape the work, yielding an experience that is quiet yet deeply impactful.
3. An experience where fish you draw “swim in the sea”
In the work 《Sketch Ocean》, you first freely draw a fish on paper. Then, when you scan that drawing, your fish begins to swim through the “digital ocean” right before your eyes. Touch the fish you drew and it will be startled and swim away; touch the feed bag and you can feed it—these interactive movements become memorable experiences.
Even more intriguing, among the fish you draw, “tuna” will sometimes go beyond the museum’s boundaries and swim to 《Sketch Ocean》 installations at teamLab museums around the world. It’s a uniquely teamLab museum experience that feels as if the piece you created is connecting with the world in real time.
Other recommended information
If you visit teamLab Borderless, we also recommend using the tea house “EN TEA HOUSE” inside the venue. When you pour tea into the bowl, flowers bloom, and as long as there is tea, the flowers continue to bloom endlessly. The world within the tea expands infinitely, and the experience of flowers continuing to bloom is perfect for savoring the work at a leisurely pace.
