【60th Anniversary Special Exhibition 2】 Okumura Togyu ―A Century’s Journey Through Masterpieces―
A special exhibition commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Yamatane Museum of Art
“Okumura Togyu — Tracing 100 Years Through Masterpieces”
The Yamatane Museum of Art is holding the 60th Anniversary Commemorative Special Exhibition 2, “Okumura Togyu — Tracing 100 Years Through Masterpieces.” Focusing on the deep connection between the Japanese painter Okumura Togyu (1889–1990) and the Yamatane Museum of Art, this exhibition traces his career from his early years to his final period. Taneji Yamazaki, the founder of the Yamatane Museum of Art, maintained a friendship with Togyu for more than 50 years from the early stages of his career. Thanks to that bond, the museum holds 135 works by Okumura Togyu; from among them, about 60 outstanding pieces, including representative works such as 《鳴門》 and 《醍醐》, are presented in this exhibition.
Exhibition Highlights
Approximately 60 works from one of Japan’s foremost Togyu collections on view
From the 135 Okumura Togyu works in the Yamatane Museum of Art’s collection, approximately 60 carefully selected pieces are on display. Beginning with 《鳴門》 and 《醍醐》, you can trace Togyu’s artistic trajectory from his earliest to his final works.
Works exhibited at the Inten brought together in one place
Okumura Togyu was active at the Inten throughout his life. This exhibition presents 35 Inten-related works from the Yamatane Museum of Art’s collection: 32 from the Autumn Inten, 2 from the Spring Inten, and 1 from the Members’ Exhibition.
Materials unique to the Yamatane Museum also on view
In addition to artworks, you can also see items related to the museum, such as illustrated letters that Okumura Togyu sent to the museum’s founder, Taneji Yamazaki, and original drawings for commemorative gifts from tea gatherings once held at the museum.
Curator-led gallery talks also held
During the exhibition, curator-led gallery talks are held every Wednesday (except holidays). The duration is about 30 minutes, and capacity is up to 25 people; numbered tickets will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis in the 1st-floor lobby from 9:50 a.m. on the day.
