Hanazono Shrine O-Tori Festival (Tori-no-Ichi)

Hanazono Shrine Otori Festival (Tori-no-Ichi): A Shinjuku seasonal tradition praying for business prosperity and good fortune

Held every November at Hanazono Shrine in Shinjuku, the “Otori Festival (Tori-no-Ichi)” is a traditional event where many worshippers come to pray for prosperous business and good fortune.
The shrine grounds are lined with numerous stalls selling kumade (decorative good-luck rakes), enveloping the area in the lively spirit unique to festivals. While sensing Shinjuku’s transition from autumn to winter, this event lets you enjoy the atmosphere of a traditional Japanese festival.

Highlights of the Otori Festival

Shrine grounds lined with lucky kumade rakes

One of the highlights of Tori-no-Ichi is the lucky kumade rakes, which embody prayers for prosperous business and good fortune. Rows of vividly decorated kumade brighten the shrine grounds. Enjoy the festival’s bustle while experiencing this traditional Japanese good-luck charm.

Eve festival and main festival

In 2026, it will be held twice—on the First Tori and the Second Tori—with both an eve festival and a main festival. From the eve festival onward, many stalls line the grounds and the lively atmosphere continues into the night.

It is easily accessible from Shinjuku-sanchome Station, and visiting in combination with a stroll around the neighborhood is also recommended.
