Special Exhibition Edo paintings that captivated the world come together! 「A Riot of Flowers—Edo Paintings that Crossed the Seas」 At the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, the commemorative exhibition 「The British Museum Japanese Art Collection—A Riot of Flowers: Edo Paintings that Crossed the Seas」 is being held to mark the museum’s 100th anniversary. This exhibition showcases carefully selected masterpieces—including Edo-period paintings and ukiyo-e prints—from the British Museum’s approximately 40,000-piece Japanese collection, held by one of the world’s leading museums. Works by leading Edo-period ukiyo-e artists such as Katsushika Hokusai, Kitagawa Utamaro, Utagawa Hiroshige, and Tōshūsai Sharaku will be on view, along with rare pieces returning to Japan from the United Kingdom for the first time. Highlights of the Exhibition POINT 01 Masterpieces of Japanese art from the British Museum Carefully selected folding screens, hanging scrolls, handscrolls, and ukiyo-e prints from the Edo period are on view from the British Museum’s Japanese collection. Highlights include Kitagawa Utamaro’s hand-painted work 《文読む遊女》, Maruyama Ōkyo’s 《虎の子渡し図屛風》, and Katsushika Hokusai’s 《『万物絵本大全』版下絵》, which you can enjoy up close. POINT 02 Hokusai works making their first homecoming from the UK Katsushika Hokusai’s 《『万物絵本大全』版下絵》 is returning to Japan from the United Kingdom for the first time. This exhibition presents 8 of the 103 printing-design drawings that had long been missing. POINT 03 Fusuma paintings reunited after about 150 years Also noteworthy are the fusuma-e created by 狩野宗眼重信 from the late Momoyama to the early Edo period. Works that had been divided between the British Museum and the Miyakoshi family, an old household in Nakasato, Aomori Prefecture, were identified through recent research as parts of a single series. They will be reunited for the first time in roughly 150 years. Recommended for Recommended for those interested in Japanese art and ukiyo-e, those who wish to view works by artists such as Katsushika Hokusai and Kitagawa Utamaro in person, and those looking for an exhibition in Tokyo where they can experience history and culture. As it is held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum in Ueno Park, we also recommend enjoying it together with nearby museums and sightseeing spots. Japan debut! Immersive VR experience "Titanic: Echoes Across Time" The immersive VR experience "Titanic: Echoes Across Time" will be held at the permanent VR theater "Storydive Theater WAHHHP" in Shinjuku, Tokyo, starting Friday, October 23, 2026. This work is a VR experience that lets you journey from exploring the wreck lying in the deep sea to the ship’s interior in 1912. After exploring the remains of the Titanic resting about 3,800 meters deep in the Atlantic Ocean, you will travel back in time and tour the ship’s interior during its 1912 maiden voyage as one of the passengers of the time. Highlights of the experience Explore the Titanic resting in the deep sea The experience begins with you boarding a research submersible as a member of a shipwreck investigation team to explore the wreck of the Titanic lying in the deep. Guided by a historian, you will trace the ship’s remnants and items preserved for over a century, uncovering the stories hidden within the Titanic. Walk through the ship as it was in 1912 After the deep-sea exploration, you’ll step aboard the Titanic before she sank. First- and third-class cabins, the engine room, the Grand Staircase, the boat deck—wander through the faithfully recreated interiors on foot. Meticulous reconstruction based on historical sources The production involved two years of research. By cross-checking archival materials from France’s maritime museum "La Cité de la Mer" and the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the ship, its passengers, and events have been carefully rebuilt. In addition to walking through the interiors, the experience is interactive, allowing you to participate by operating elements yourself—such as retrieving a waterproof case from the seafloor. Recommended for Recommended for those interested in the history of the Titanic and VR experiences, and for anyone who wants to enjoy a different kind of activity while sightseeing in Tokyo.
