A design facility that explores diverse events and issues through design
【21_21 DESIGN SIGHT】
Located within Tokyo Midtown Garden in Akasaka, Minato City, Tokyo, 「21_21 DESIGN SIGHT」 is a design facility that aims to consider various events and matters through design, fostering understanding of and interest in design.
Through multifaceted programs centered on exhibitions, it serves as a place where people of all backgrounds can participate and make proposals, allowing visitors to encounter the joy of design and fresh surprises.
In addition to 「Gallery 1&2」 for special exhibitions held several times a year, the facility includes 「Gallery 3」, which hosts exhibitions and design presentations by companies from Japan and abroad.
The architecture itself is also one of the major highlights. Designed by Tadao Ando, the building features a roof like “a single piece of cloth” and incorporates Japanese technology throughout. With about 80% of its volume located underground and a sunken court that admits natural light, a dynamic space unfolds.
Top 3 highlights
1. Enjoy design from multiple angles, with exhibitions at the core
In 「Gallery 1&2」, we hold special exhibitions several times a year that consider "everyday life" from a design perspective.
Exhibition directors include designers and experts from a wide range of fields. Through displays that examine a single theme from various angles, we offer opportunities to rethink the things and events we casually encounter from a new, design-oriented point of view.
Furthermore, in 「Gallery 3」 we present exhibitions and design presentations by companies from Japan and abroad. Through collaborative programs with educational and cultural institutions, we explore even more multifaceted "design perspectives."
2. A dynamic space created by the architecture itself
The building of 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT was designed by Tadao Ando. Inspired by Issey Miyake’s garment-making concept of "a piece of cloth," it features a roof that looks like a single steel plate folded over.
With about 80% of the volume placed underground and a sunken court that lets in natural light, the interior offers distinctive, dynamic spaces.
By not only viewing the exhibitions but also focusing on the architecture and the space itself, you can experience design more three-dimensionally.
3. Feel design up close through exhibitions and the shop
The gallery shop "21_21 NANJA MONJA" on-site features original goods, books related to exhibitions, and various items.
If you stop by after viewing a special exhibition, you can further enjoy the designs and themes that piqued your interest through books and items.
One of the distinctive points of 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is that you can engage with design from different angles—through exhibitions, architecture, and the shop.

The early 13th-century essay Hōjōki by Kamo no Chōmei poses questions about how to live in an ever-changing world. The hermitage where Chōmei lived no longer exists, but his words have been read across ages, offering clues to the essence of dwelling. Taking as its starting point the small architecture that appears in Hōjōki, "Hōjō no an," this exhibition reconsiders contemporary life and the built environment. Under the direction of architect Yoshiharu Tsukamoto, the exhibition director, architects, designers, artists, and companies each envision their own "Hōjō no an." Exhibition Highlights Considering life from a small architecture of about 9 m² Using the one-jō-square scale—about 9 m²—of "Hōjō no an" as a guide, the exhibition presents various devices that reexamine ways of living through materials, structure, and tools. Experience multiple "Hōjō no an" Alongside research on nature and daily life depicted in Hōjōki, multiple hermitages are presented in the venue. As visitors move through the exhibition space, they can encounter "Hōjō no an" composed from different perspectives. Turning attention to the space between Hōjōki and contemporary life This exhibition is not solely about interpreting Hōjōki itself. It seeks to focus on the "life" that emerges between Hōjōki and us, offering a chance to reengage with how we live today. Recommended for This exhibition is recommended not only for those interested in architecture, design, and Japanese culture, but also for anyone who wishes to consider ways of living in limited spaces and the future of housing. It is well worth stopping by when visiting museums and design venues in Tokyo’s Roppongi area. Photo: 木奥恵三 Photo: 木奥恵三 ※Exhibition contents and participating artists are subject to change.
