Special Exhibition Special exhibition commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Yamatane Museum of Art’s opening “Okumura Togyu — Tracing 100 Years through Masterpieces —” The Yamatane Museum of Art is holding the 60th Anniversary Special Exhibition 2, “Okumura Togyu — Tracing 100 Years through Masterpieces.” Focusing on the deep ties between the Japanese painter Okumura Togyu (1889-1990) and the Yamatane Museum of Art, this exhibition traces his career from the early period to his final years. The museum’s founder, Yamazaki Taneji, maintained a friendship with Togyu for over 50 years from the early days of his career. Thanks to that connection, the museum holds 135 works by Okumura Togyu; this exhibition presents about 60 outstanding pieces from among them, including representative works such as 《鳴門》 and 《醍醐》. Exhibition Highlights POINT 01 Around 60 works on view from one of Japan’s premier Togyu collections From the 135 Okumura Togyu works in the Yamatane Museum of Art’s collection, approximately 60 carefully selected pieces are on display. Beginning with 《鳴門》 and 《醍醐》, the works from his early years to his final period trace the trajectory of Togyu’s career. POINT 02 Works shown at the Inten gathered together Okumura Togyu was active at the Inten throughout his life. This exhibition brings together 35 Inten-related works from the Yamatane Museum of Art’s collection: 32 from the Autumn Inten, 2 from the Spring Inten, and 1 from the 同人展. POINT 03 Materials unique to the Yamatane Museum of Art also featured In addition to artworks, visitors can see materials connected to the Yamatane Museum of Art, such as illustrated letters sent by Okumura Togyu to the museum’s founder, Yamazaki Taneji, and original drawings for commemorative items from tea gatherings once held at the museum. Art Festival An art festival to enjoy across the streets of Shimokita "Moon Art Night Shimokitazawa 2026" "Moon Art Night Shimokitazawa 2026", themed around the moon and art, will be held across the entire Shimokitazawa area. From Shimokita Senrogai to nearby shopping streets and facilities, a variety of artworks and events will appear throughout the town. It is a new kind of art festival where you can stroll around while appreciating art and enjoy the culture and atmosphere unique to Shimokitazawa. Special Exhibition Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum "Landscapes of This Place—Ueno, Ōmuta, Buenos Aires" Now Open An exhibition that looks at 100 years from three places To mark the 100th anniversary of the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum’s opening, the special exhibition "Landscapes of This Place—Ueno, Ōmuta, Buenos Aires" is being held. The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum opened in 1926 in Ueno Park, Tokyo, as Japan’s first public art museum. Its name at the time was "Tokyo Prefectural Art Museum." This exhibition reflects on the museum’s 100-year journey through creative activities carried out in three places: Ueno, Ōmuta, and Buenos Aires. It follows the history of the museum alongside the scenery of Ueno; the path of a painter who continued to work self-taught in Ōmuta, Fukuoka; and research in Buenos Aires, Argentina, sparked by a single painting made in 1926. By tracing different places and individual practices in parallel, the exhibition moves beyond the "center/periphery" framework to contemplate the fundamental meaning of artistic expression. Highlights of the Exhibition PART 01 A century of "Ueno" revisited through diverse materials Part I, "Ueno—100 Years of the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum," presents a wide range of records, including paintings, prints, photographs, and materials from the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum Archives. It looks back from the birth of the Tokyo (Prefectural) Art Museum, through wartime and postwar years, to activities after the opening of the new building in 1975, alongside views of Ueno from the same periods. From multiple perspectives, you can trace both the history of exhibitions held at the museum and the ways Ueno has transformed as a cultural place. PART 02 The creative trajectory of the self-taught painter Shigeo Egami introduced in Tokyo for the first time Part II, "Ōmuta—100 Years of Shigeo Egami," focuses on the work of Shigeo Egami (1912–2014), who lived in Ōmuta, Fukuoka Prefecture, and steadfastly painted as a self-taught, independent artist. Using familiar materials such as pencil, watercolor, and oil pastel/crayon, Egami continued to engage with the landscapes close at hand. Through around 400 works—including woodcuts, experimental abstract paintings, and dyed-paper pieces—the exhibition traces his long creative path. This is the first opportunity for Egami’s works to be presented in Tokyo in a comprehensive manner. PART 03 A research project starting from 《The Zinnia Garden》 Starting from the painting 《The Zinnia Garden》, regarded as the first item in the collection of the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, this research project pursues the mysteries surrounding the presumed author “藤岡鉄太郎.” Focusing on a person with the same name who went to Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1927 and worked in the landscaping and floriculture industries, we trace the trajectories of the work and the individual across 100 years. In addition, based on flower photographs collected through a public call, we will produce a page-a-day calendar for 2027. In addition to the specimens, materials, and research findings held by the National Museum of Nature and Science, it introduces the diverse evolution and ecology of living creatures through footage filmed by NHK’s nature program 『ダーウィンが来た！』. Exhibition Highlights POINT 01 Learn about the evolution of life through specimens, research, and video The exhibition introduces, by theme, the traits and functions of organisms that have adapted to a variety of environments. Through real specimens, the latest research findings, and valuable nature footage, you can enjoy learning how animals have adapted to their environments and sustained life. POINT 02 A collaborative project with 『ダーウィンが来た！』 Through a collaboration with NHK’s nature program 『ダーウィンが来た！』, the exhibition presents footage shot by the program’s production team. The exhibition’s original character “くじらじい” was born from a collaboration with “ヒゲじい,” familiar from 『ダーウィンが来た！』. While highlighting notable specimens, research, and videos, the exhibition delves into the wonders of living things. POINT 03 Enjoy an audio guide, too The audio guide features the exhibition navigator 相葉雅紀, “くじらじい,” and “ヒゲじい.” On-site rental version: 650 yen per device (tax included); app distribution version: 800 yen (tax included).
