A lush walking spot to encounter seasonal nature in the city
【Institute for Nature Study, National Museum of Nature and Science】
Located in Shirokanedai, Minato City, Tokyo, the Institute for Nature Study, National Museum of Nature and Science is a natural spot where, despite being in the heart of the city, expansive forested green spaces allow you to observe plants and wildlife in every season. Step away from the urban bustle and stroll along paths surrounded by trees to enjoy nature’s changing expressions with each season.
Within the grounds, areas such as a roadside plant garden, an aquatic plant garden, forest paths, and a waterfowl marsh have been developed, letting you experience a variety of natural environments. Beyond observing plants, you can also enjoy waterside scenery and wild birds—the charm of nature you encounter changes depending on where you walk.
Furthermore, the Education and Administration Building houses an exhibition hall, rest areas, a shop, and lecture rooms, allowing you to tour the garden at a leisurely pace while learning about nature. It’s recommended not only for those who enjoy nature observation, but also for family outings and for spending a quiet moment during Tokyo sightseeing.

This exhibition focuses on five artists who create works using diverse technologies and materials such as AI, CG, and stop-motion animation. The exhibition highlights the creative processes that assemble real memories, materials, technologies, and each artist’s own context into new images. In a world overflowing with information, where it is difficult to discern truth from falsehood, the show offers an opportunity to reflect on what we believe and how we perceive the world. Exhibition Highlights New expressions born from diverse technologies and materials The participating artists are 市田小百合, 苅部太郎, 野村在, 橋本麦, and 藤倉麻子. Each, through different methods and perspectives, creates works that engage with memory, images, and the boundary between reality and fiction. 市田小百合 presents, for the first time in Japan, an installation that reconstructs fragments of a school building using a blackboard as the support, themed around the time accumulated in the place of school. 苅部太郎 combines glitch noise generated by a television receiver with generative AI to probe the mechanisms of perception and of “seeing.” Additionally, 野村在 focuses on the materiality of the photographic medium by burning portrait photographs and recording the light of the flames with long exposures. 橋本麦 will exhibit a new installation using stop-motion animation created with self-made devices and tools. 藤倉麻子 will present an installation that constructs a fictional city and its society using live-action footage, CG, AI, and more. Also spotlighting the “process” by which works are created The exhibition draws attention not only to the finished works but also to the creative process—how images are assembled and transformed into new expressions. In particular, 橋本麦 will conduct public production during the exhibition period, presenting the process by which the work comes into being alongside the completed footage. Talks by exhibiting artists and guests will also be held During the exhibition period, talk events featuring exhibiting artists and guests will be held. Starting with 市田小百合×本橋仁 on October 4, a total of five talks are planned with 野村在×岡部あおみ、苅部太郎×下西風澄、橋本麦×辻川幸一郎、藤倉麻子×南後由和. The venue is the 1st-floor hall of the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, and participation is free. Numbered tickets will be distributed at the first-floor general reception from 10:00 on the day. Recommended for Recommended for those interested in photography, video, and contemporary art, and for those who want to enjoy expressions that incorporate new technologies. Check RouteMeguro Ward Lecture & Culture2026.09.30(水)–2027.01.17(日)Exhibition Contemporary photography and moving images from China and Japan in resonance 「Duet――Asian Contemporary」 At the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, the exhibition 「Duet――Asian Contemporary」 will be held. Presenting contemporary photographic and moving-image works from China and Japan, it is planned as the second in a series following the 2018 「On Love: Asian Contemporary」. Taking the word 「Duet」 as a clue, the exhibition presents works with differing viewpoints and backgrounds in the same space, focusing on the relationships and resonances that emerge where multiple perspectives, cultures, time, and personal experiences intersect. Exhibition Highlights Diverse photographic and moving-image works by six artists from China and Japan The venue presents works by six artists: 村越としや, ワン・トゥオ(王拓), スイ・タカ(塔可), ルオ・ヤン(罗洋), ジャン・ポンイー(蒋鹏奕), and fumiko imano. From 村越としや’s works capturing the memories of the land in Fukushima; ワン・トゥオ’s moving-image works addressing the history and society of Northeast China; スイ・タカ’s photographic series traveling to the locales sung in the Shijing, China’s oldest poetry anthology; to ルオ・ヤン’s works that capture the identities of young people and Asian immigrants, the exhibition looks at contemporary Asia through each artist’s distinctive perspective. Experience the many possibilities of photographic expression ジャン・ポンイー creates 〈Dark Addiction〉 using a camera-less technique that directly records the trails of fireflies’ bioluminescence onto film. fumiko imano develops self-portrait collage works featuring an imaginary pair of twin sisters. Through works employing different techniques and modes of expression, this exhibition offers an encounter with the diverse expressions of contemporary photography and moving images. Related events to enjoy alongside the exhibition During the exhibition period, in addition to a symposium featuring the co-organizer, photography critics, and the curator in charge, there will also be a Q&A show incorporating sign language and a gallery talk by the curator. The symposium is scheduled for Saturday, October 3, 2026, with Japanese–Chinese consecutive interpreting, sign language interpreting, and real-time captioning provided. Recommended for Recommended for those interested in contemporary photography and moving-image works, those who want to experience contemporary art from China and Japan, and those who want to enjoy works that capture Asia from diverse cultures and perspectives.
