A photography exhibition that explores food and considers how we will live going forward

At the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, the exhibition "TOP Collection: Tomorrow's Dining Table," which examines the relationship between "food" and "living" through photography and moving images, is being held. The venue is the 3rd-floor gallery of the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum. The exhibition runs from Thursday, July 2, 2026 to Monday, September 21, 2026 (public holiday).
"TOP Collection" is an exhibition that introduces, from various angles, some of the approximately 39,000 photographic and moving-image works in the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum's collection.
In this exhibition, by viewing the works through the lens of "food," we also consider issues facing contemporary society such as aging and solitary eating. Through dining tables depicted in photographs and films, the exhibition invites each visitor to reflect on "eating" and "living together."

Considering "food" and society across four galleries

ROOM 01

Room 1 "At That Time, at That Table"

Featuring works by five artists—島尾伸三、原美樹子、野口里佳、潮田登久子、川内倫子—centered on memories of family and personal dining tables.
It turns our gaze from everyday food scenes that come to mind to the ways the dining table accumulates as memory.

ROOM 02

Room 2 "Between Food and Place"

Through works by 奈良原一高、山田實、宮本隆司、竹谷出, we reexamine the ties between land and food.
From urban eateries to fisheries and practices that pray for bountiful harvests and catches, the exhibition considers how food has been connected to each locality. The 〈にほんのかけら〉 series by 竹谷出 will be displayed for the first time since being added to the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum's collection.

ROOM 03

Room 3 "Within the Environment"

Through works by 宮崎学、土田ヒロミ、楢橋朝子、岩井優, we consider the relationship between human activity and the natural environment.
Against the backdrop of issues surrounding food and everyday life—including fluctuations in food prices, changes in wildlife habitats, and the reputational harm to food caused by rumors following the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident associated with the Great East Japan Earthquake—we look at the relationship between our lives and the environment.

ROOM 04

Room 4 "Tomorrow's Dining Table"

We reflect on the future of food—how we will eat from now on. As the environment surrounding food changes due to an aging society, solitary eating, and an increase in people living alone, we present the "Grandmother's Lunch" series by 折元立身.
The series documents shared meals with local seniors at Ryusenji Temple in Nihonmatsu, Fukushima Prefecture, and a communication-art project at a monastery in Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage city in Portugal, where 500 grandmothers were invited to dance, sing, and gather around the table. This chapter invites you to reconsider the joy of sharing a table with someone and, through connections with others, the meaning of "living together."

Film screenings and collaboration menu

During the exhibition period, films themed around "food" and lifestyle—『かもめ食堂』『めがね』『土を喰らう十二ヵ月』—will be screened in the 1st-floor hall of the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum. In addition, at the 1st-floor café カフェフロムトップ, you can enjoy the exhibition's collaboration menu, including "Watermelon Cake" and a one-plate dish of duck with rice and pumpkin soup. Furthermore, at "WINE MARKET PARTY" on Basement Level 1 of Ebisu Garden Place, special benefits are available for visitors who present their exhibition ticket.
