At the foot of Mt. Takao, a place to spend a peaceful moment in an authentic Japanese garden and a historic traditional house
【Takao Komagino Garden】
Located at the foot of Mt. Takao in Hachioji, Tokyo, and surrounded by rich nature, Takao Komagino Garden is a hidden gem where you can escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy a tranquil time.
As the only park owned by Hachioji City where you can appreciate a Japanese garden, it is an authentic garden that incorporates classic design elements (pond-strolling garden, karesansui, roji), and you can admire nishikigoi carp and a permanent bonsai exhibition.
In the prewar traditional house preserved on the grounds, you can savor matcha or coffee while, through the windows, fully enjoying with all five senses the garden's seasonal expressions.
More than 80 species of plants and flowers thrive in the garden, including rare wild plants native to Mt. Takao.
The majestic scenery using the Takao mountains as borrowed landscape and the ever-changing beauty of nature bring deep peace and inspiration to visitors.
3 Recommended Highlights
1. Experience the beauty of Japan in an authentic Japanese garden
At Takao Komagino Garden, you can experience Japan’s traditional garden styles all at once.
• Pond-stroll garden: While walking the path around 心字池, you can enjoy the changing scenery. This style can also be seen at Kyoto’s 鹿苑寺(金閣寺) and the Ninomaru Garden of Nijo Castle.
• Dry landscape: A Zen temple garden style that expresses mountain-and-water scenery without using water. Quietly gazing from the “East Room,” you can feel the flow of deep mountains and valleys.
• 露地 (tea garden): A garden attached to a tea room; beneath the natural-stone washbasin, a 水琴窟 is installed, letting you enjoy beautiful tones.
Furthermore, in 心字池, colorful nishikigoi donated by the All Japan Nishikigoi Promotion Association swim gracefully, and seasonal bonsai adorn the alcoves of each room, letting you sense the essence of traditional Japanese culture throughout.
2. A special time in an old folk house filled with nostalgia and charm
The old folk house handed down since before the war offers a space full of character.
The Japanese-style rooms can also be rented for cultural and artistic activities, including the “East Room” overlooking the dry landscape, the “Middle Room” with a view of a weeping maple, and the “North Room,” a gallery space with spotlights.
In the tearoom converted from a Japanese-style room that once had a sunken kotatsu, you can relax and gaze at the garden while enjoying matcha or coffee. History and charm live on in the architectural details, from wavy glass to nostalgically patterned glass.
3. A healing space woven by nature through the four seasons
Takao Komagino Garden reveals different expressions throughout the year.
More than 80 species of plants thrive on the grounds, including precious wildflowers native to Mt. Takao.
In spring, delicate blossoms are in full bloom; in summer, the lotus in the lotus pond are at their best; in autumn, colorful foliage adorns the garden. In winter, the tranquil atmosphere after the leaves have fallen has a special charm.
The magnificent scenery that borrows the mountains of Takao as its backdrop, together with nature’s seasonal beauty, soothes visitors’ hearts.
