A relaxing spot where you can enjoy Showa-retro public bathhouse culture and an authentic sauna at the same time
【大塚記念湯】
Located in Toshima, Tokyo, just a 3-minute walk from JR Yamanote Line Otsuka Station. Nestled amid the bustle of the shopping street, 「大塚記念湯」 is a unique public bathhouse where a surprising sight unfolds the moment you step inside.
The biggest attraction is the magnificent “Great Universe” painted across the entire ceiling of the changing room. Whether while soaking in the bath or looking up after your bath, the galaxy gives you an overwhelming sense of openness that makes you forget the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
The first floor is a spacious public bath (sento) beloved by the community, and the second floor operates as “サウナニュー大塚,” offering a retro, calming sauna space that strongly retains the atmosphere of the Showa era. These two different charms coexist, and it is affectionately known among visitors from Japan and abroad as “宇宙銭湯.”
3 Recommended Highlights
1. Overwhelming immersion in the “Vast Cosmos” spreading across the ceiling
The space-themed murals painted on the changing room and bath walls are truly spectacular. The design studded with stars and planets adds a modern sense of playfulness to the traditional sento, giving you the curious sensation of relaxing in outer space. Not only is it highly photogenic, it also refreshes both body and mind visually.
2. Get centered at the Showa-retro “サウナニュー大塚”
The sauna area on the 2nd floor is an adults-only hideaway for ages 16 and up. The far-infrared saunas are set in earnest at about 100°C for men and about 90°C for women, pairing perfectly with the cold well-water plunge (about 16°C) drawn from 100 meters underground. Gowns and towels are se
3. A wide variety of baths and the convenience of dropping by empty-handed
A rich array of sento-style tubs—medicinal baths, jet baths, reclining baths, and electric baths—lets you tour the baths according to your mood. Shampoo and body soap are provided, and towel rentals are inexpensive (from 10 yen), making it easy to stop by empty-handed between sightseeing or after work.
