Despite its convenient access just a few minutes’ walk from the west exit of Nippori Station in Taito City, Tokyo, Yanaka Ginza Shopping Street still preserves the nostalgic scenery of the “shitamachi” old downtown. Since its founding, it has upheld the mission of “passing the shopping-street culture on to the next generation”, becoming a place loved by local residents and tourists alike. Along the approximately 170-meter street, around 60–70 independent shops stand side by side. Fishmongers, delicatessens, wagashi confectioners, and household-goods stores line the way, creating a lived-in atmosphere where you can feel the warmth of the people.

Walking through Yanaka Ginza, you feel as if time has turned back a little. Wooden signboards, narrow alleys, people chatting in front of shops…. These nostalgic scenes gently soothe the hearts of visitors.
2. Around 60 diverse shops and the joy of eating while walking
On a short street of about 170 meters, a variety of shops gather, from deli foods and fried items to Japanese sweets and general stores. The “eat-while-you-walk” style—strolling with a freshly fried croquette or menchi-katsu in hand—is a pleasure unique to Yanaka Ginza.
3. The famous “夕やけだんだん” and scenes with cats
At the entrance on the Nippori Station side, there is a staircase called “夕やけだんだん.” In the evening, the sky turns crimson and the entire street is bathed in warm light. The view of the shopping street from there is truly a “healing moment” in Tokyo.
Also, Yanaka is known as a “cat town.” As you walk through the shopping street and back alleys, you often encounter cats sunbathing. The tranquil scenes naturally bring a smile to your face.

Throughout the year, community-based events are held in the Yanaka Ginza shopping street.
At the start of the year, during the “Yanaka Seven Lucky Gods Pilgrimage & Shopping Street Tour,” lottery drawings and mochi-pounding events are held.
In summer, the “Yanaka Hyakkoi Festival” features Bon Odori, stamp rallies, dojo loach scooping, cool summer lotteries, and more.
During the “Grand Thanksgiving Festival” in July and December, the shopping street bustles with double-stamp sales and lottery promotions.
