A small-group wagashi-making & matcha experience class where you can experience Japanese traditional culture
【和菓子教室 sakura】
Located in Tokyo’s historic and atmospheric 「谷根千」 area, 「和菓子教室 sakura」 is a special place where you can easily experience wagashi making that expresses Japan’s beautiful four seasons and soothing matcha.
Even if you feel that “wagashi making seems difficult,” please don’t worry. At our classroom, experienced instructors provide careful guidance in small groups of up to six people, teaching wagashi you can easily recreate at home. We also share tips so anyone can whisk delicious matcha without being bound by rigid formalities. In particular, for guests from overseas and international students, we offer opportunities to explore the depth of Japanese traditional culture with explanations in English.
By crafting beautiful wagashi and savoring fragrant matcha, why not feel Japanese culture and the changing seasons with all five senses? Combine it with a stroll around 「谷根千」 to create unforgettable memories.
Our Top 3 Highlights
1. Hands-on courses that blend tradition with convenience
Our studio offers two courses: a “Regular Class,” where you make 2–4 types of seasonal wagashi, and an “Experience Class,” where you make one type of nerikiri (two pieces). The “Experience Class” is especially convenient, letting you enjoy wagashi making and a matcha tasting in just 1.5 hours, so it’s easy to join even between sightseeing. You can savor the sweets you make on the spot with matcha, and you can also take them home. Experience the joy of crafting wagashi—filled with Japan’s refined aesthetic—with your own hands.
2. English-friendly classes for international tourists and students
At “和菓子教室 sakura,” we offer classes that include explanations in English for foreign visitors and exchange students interested in Japan’s traditional culture. You can learn the history, ingredients, and steps of making wagashi in English, allowing you to enjoy a cultural experience with confidence and without language barriers. Through simple wagashi making and a matcha tasting, it’s an excellent opportunity to deepen your understanding of Japanese culture.
3. The “Yanesen” area where Tokyo’s history and culture live on
“Yanesen,” where our studio is located, is a nickname formed from the first letters of Yanaka, Nezu, and Sendagi. It’s a charming area that preserves the scenery of old Tokyo. Retro shops and cafés, along with historic temples and shrines, are dotted along its narrow lanes; even just strolling around lets you feel the best of Japan’s old-time culture. It’s also close to Ueno Park and the Tokyo National Museum, so you can fully enjoy Tokyo’s deeper charms alongside your wagashi-making experience.

Check RouteOta Ward Gourmet2026.09.26(土)On Saturday, September 26, 2026, at Ota City Industrial Plaza PiO, we will host a large networking event exclusively for people in their 20s and 30s, 「蒲田BIG恋活フェス」! Beyond matching apps, we want to create a place to meet where people can actually see each other face to face and talk naturally while sharing the same time and space. With that in mind, this is a community-based dating event planned to be held in Kamata. “In everyday life, there are few opportunities to meet new people” “It’s hard to grasp someone’s vibe through a matching app” “Formal marriage-hunting parties make me a bit nervous” We aim to offer a casual networking event that helps people in their 20s and 30s take the first step with ease. The venue is about a 3-minute walk from Keikyu Kamata Station. It’s a standing, free-mingling style event for up to 250 people, where you can socialize while enjoying light snacks and all-you-can-drink. It’s not a format where you talk to assigned partners in turn. You can move freely around the venue and enjoy conversations at your own pace with anyone who interests you. First-timers and solo attendees are very welcome! You can also join with friends. Of course, those looking for a partner are welcome, and so are those who “just want to talk to new people first.” Please feel free to join us.
