Assembling Again: Japan's Emerging Artists vol.23
Five emerging Japanese artists explore new images
“Reassembling: Emerging Japanese Artists vol. 23”
At the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, the special exhibition “Reassembling: Emerging Japanese Artists vol. 23” will be held. This exhibition focuses on five artists who create works using diverse technologies and materials such as AI, CG, and stop-motion animation.
The exhibition highlights the creative processes that assemble real memories, materials, technologies, and each artist’s own context into new images. In a world overflowing with information, where it is difficult to discern truth from falsehood, the show offers an opportunity to reflect on what we believe and how we perceive the world.
Exhibition Highlights
The participating artists are 市田小百合, 苅部太郎, 野村在, 橋本麦, and 藤倉麻子. Each, through different methods and perspectives, creates works that engage with memory, images, and the boundary between reality and fiction.
市田小百合 presents, for the first time in Japan, an installation that reconstructs fragments of a school building using a blackboard as the support, themed around the time accumulated in the place of school. 苅部太郎 combines glitch noise generated by a television receiver with generative AI to probe the mechanisms of perception and of “seeing.”
Additionally, 野村在 focuses on the materiality of the photographic medium by burning portrait photographs and recording the light of the flames with long exposures. 橋本麦 will exhibit a new installation using stop-motion animation created with self-made devices and tools. 藤倉麻子 will present an installation that constructs a fictional city and its society using live-action footage, CG, AI, and more.
The exhibition draws attention not only to the finished works but also to the creative process—how images are assembled and transformed into new expressions.
In particular, 橋本麦 will conduct public production during the exhibition period, presenting the process by which the work comes into being alongside the completed footage.
During the exhibition period, talk events featuring exhibiting artists and guests will be held. Starting with 市田小百合×本橋仁 on October 4, a total of five talks are planned with 野村在×岡部あおみ、苅部太郎×下西風澄、橋本麦×辻川幸一郎、藤倉麻子×南後由和.
The venue is the 1st-floor hall of the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, and participation is free. Numbered tickets will be distributed at the first-floor general reception from 10:00 on the day.
