Duet――Asian Contemporary

Exhibition

Contemporary photography and moving images from China and Japan in resonance
「Duet――Asian Contemporary」

At the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, the exhibition 「Duet――Asian Contemporary」 will be held. Presenting contemporary photographic and moving-image works from China and Japan, it is planned as the second in a series following the 2018 「On Love: Asian Contemporary」.

Taking the word 「Duet」 as a clue, the exhibition presents works with differing viewpoints and backgrounds in the same space, focusing on the relationships and resonances that emerge where multiple perspectives, cultures, time, and personal experiences intersect.

Exhibition Highlights

Diverse photographic and moving-image works by six artists from China and Japan

The venue presents works by six artists: 村越としや, ワン・トゥオ(王拓), スイ・タカ(塔可), ルオ・ヤン(罗洋), ジャン・ポンイー(蒋鹏奕), and fumiko imano.

From 村越としや’s works capturing the memories of the land in Fukushima; ワン・トゥオ’s moving-image works addressing the history and society of Northeast China; スイ・タカ’s photographic series traveling to the locales sung in the Shijing, China’s oldest poetry anthology; to ルオ・ヤン’s works that capture the identities of young people and Asian immigrants, the exhibition looks at contemporary Asia through each artist’s distinctive perspective.

Experience the many possibilities of photographic expression

ジャン・ポンイー creates 〈Dark Addiction〉 using a camera-less technique that directly records the trails of fireflies’ bioluminescence onto film. fumiko imano develops self-portrait collage works featuring an imaginary pair of twin sisters.

Through works employing different techniques and modes of expression, this exhibition offers an encounter with the diverse expressions of contemporary photography and moving images.

Related events to enjoy alongside the exhibition

During the exhibition period, in addition to a symposium featuring the co-organizer, photography critics, and the curator in charge, there will also be a Q&A show incorporating sign language and a gallery talk by the curator.

The symposium is scheduled for Saturday, October 3, 2026, with Japanese–Chinese consecutive interpreting, sign language interpreting, and real-time captioning provided.
