Duet――Asian Contemporary
Exhibition Contemporary photography and moving images from China and Japan in resonance 「Duet――Asian Contemporary」 At the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, the exhibition 「Duet――Asian Contemporary」 will be held. Presenting contemporary photographic and moving-image works from China and Japan, it is planned as the second in a series following the 2018 「On Love: Asian Contemporary」. Taking the word 「Duet」 as a clue, the exhibition presents works with differing viewpoints and backgrounds in the same space, focusing on the relationships and resonances that emerge where multiple perspectives, cultures, time, and personal experiences intersect. Exhibition Highlights Diverse photographic and moving-image works by six artists from China and Japan The venue presents works by six artists: 村越としや, ワン・トゥオ(王拓), スイ・タカ(塔可), ルオ・ヤン(罗洋), ジャン・ポンイー(蒋鹏奕), and fumiko imano. From 村越としや’s works capturing the memories of the land in Fukushima; ワン・トゥオ’s moving-image works addressing the history and society of Northeast China; スイ・タカ’s photographic series traveling to the locales sung in the Shijing, China’s oldest poetry anthology; to ルオ・ヤン’s works that capture the identities of young people and Asian immigrants, the exhibition looks at contemporary Asia through each artist’s distinctive perspective. Experience the many possibilities of photographic expression ジャン・ポンイー creates 〈Dark Addiction〉 using a camera-less technique that directly records the trails of fireflies’ bioluminescence onto film. fumiko imano develops self-portrait collage works featuring an imaginary pair of twin sisters. Through works employing different techniques and modes of expression, this exhibition offers an encounter with the diverse expressions of contemporary photography and moving images. Related events to enjoy alongside the exhibition During the exhibition period, in addition to a symposium featuring the co-organizer, photography critics, and the curator in charge, there will also be a Q&A show incorporating sign language and a gallery talk by the curator. The symposium is scheduled for Saturday, October 3, 2026, with Japanese–Chinese consecutive interpreting, sign language interpreting, and real-time captioning provided. Recommended for Recommended for those interested in contemporary photography and moving-image works, those who want to experience contemporary art from China and Japan, and those who want to enjoy works that capture Asia from diverse cultures and perspectives. Because it is held at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum located within Yebisu Garden Place, we also recommend combining your visit with museums and sightseeing spots in the Ebisu area. Assembling Again: Japan's Emerging Artists vol.23
Special Exhibition Five emerging Japanese artists explore new images “Reassembling: Emerging Japanese Artists vol. 23” At the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, the special exhibition “Reassembling: Emerging Japanese Artists vol. 23” will be held. This exhibition focuses on five artists who create works using diverse technologies and materials such as AI, CG, and stop-motion animation. The exhibition highlights the creative processes that assemble real memories, materials, technologies, and each artist’s own context into new images. In a world overflowing with information, where it is difficult to discern truth from falsehood, the show offers an opportunity to reflect on what we believe and how we perceive the world. Exhibition Highlights New expressions born from diverse technologies and materials The participating artists are 市田小百合, 苅部太郎, 野村在, 橋本麦, and 藤倉麻子. Each, through different methods and perspectives, creates works that engage with memory, images, and the boundary between reality and fiction. 市田小百合 presents, for the first time in Japan, an installation that reconstructs fragments of a school building using a blackboard as the support, themed around the time accumulated in the place of school. 苅部太郎 combines glitch noise generated by a television receiver with generative AI to probe the mechanisms of perception and of “seeing.” Additionally, 野村在 focuses on the materiality of the photographic medium by burning portrait photographs and recording the light of the flames with long exposures. 橋本麦 will exhibit a new installation using stop-motion animation created with self-made devices and tools. 藤倉麻子 will present an installation that constructs a fictional city and its society using live-action footage, CG, AI, and more. Also spotlighting the “process” by which works are created The exhibition draws attention not only to the finished works but also to the creative process—how images are assembled and transformed into new expressions. In particular, 橋本麦 will conduct public production during the exhibition period, presenting the process by which the work comes into being alongside the completed footage. Talks by exhibiting artists and guests will also be held During the exhibition period, talk events featuring exhibiting artists and guests will be held. Starting with 市田小百合×本橋仁 on October 4, a total of five talks are planned with 野村在×岡部あおみ、苅部太郎×下西風澄、橋本麦×辻川幸一郎、藤倉麻子×南後由和. The venue is the 1st-floor hall of the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, and participation is free. Numbered tickets will be distributed at the first-floor general reception from 10:00 on the day. Recommended for Recommended for those interested in photography, video, and contemporary art, and for those who want to enjoy expressions that incorporate new technologies. TOP Collection: Tomorrow’s Dining Table
Collection Exhibition Tokyo Photographic Art Museum “TOP Collection: Tomorrow’s Dining Table” Now Open A photography exhibition that looks at food and reflects on how we live At the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, the exhibition “TOP Collection: Tomorrow’s Dining Table,” which explores the relationship between “food” and “living” through photography and moving images, is being held. The venue is the 3rd-floor exhibition gallery of the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum. The exhibition runs from Thursday, July 2 to Monday (national holiday), September 21, 2026. “TOP Collection” is a series of exhibitions that presents approximately 39,000 photographic and moving-image works in the museum’s collection from a variety of perspectives. Using “food” as a key to view the works, this exhibition invites consideration of issues faced by contemporary society such as population aging and eating alone. Through dining tables depicted in photographs and videos, it invites each visitor to reflect on “eating” and “living together.” Considering food and society across four galleries ROOM 01 Room 1 “Back Then, at That Table” Featuring works by five artists—島尾伸三、原美樹子、野口里佳、潮田登久子、川内倫子—on the theme of memories of family and personal dining tables. It turns our gaze to everyday food scenes that suddenly resurface in memory and to the dining table as an accumulation of memories. ROOM 02 Room 2 “Between Food and Place” Through works by 奈良原一高、山田實、宮本隆司、竹谷出, the exhibition re-examines ties between land and food. From urban eateries to fisheries and practices that pray for bountiful harvests and catches, it considers how food has been connected to each locale. The series 〈にほんのかけら〉 by 竹谷出 will be exhibited here for the first time since entering the museum’s collection. ROOM 03 Room 3 “Within the Environment” Through works by 宮崎学、土田ヒロミ、楢橋朝子、岩井優, the exhibition considers the relationship between human activity and the natural environment. Against the backdrop of issues surrounding food and daily life—such as fluctuations in food prices, changes in wildlife habitats, and reputational damage to food following the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident triggered by the Great East Japan Earthquake—it examines the relationship between our lives and the environment. ROOM 04 Room 4 “Tomorrow’s Dining Table” This section considers the future of food—how we will eat from now on. As aging, solitary eating, and the rise in single-person households change the environment surrounding food, we introduce 折元立身’s “Grandmother’s Lunch” series. The series documents scenes of sharing meals with local seniors at Ryusenji Temple in Nihonmatsu, Fukushima Prefecture, and a communication-art project inviting 500 grandmothers to a monastery in Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage city in Portugal, where they dance, sing, and gather around the table. This chapter invites us to reconsider the joy of sharing a table and, through connections with others, the meaning of “living together.” Film Screenings and Collaboration Menu During the exhibition period, films themed around “food” and lifestyle — 『かもめ食堂』, 『めがね』, and 『土を喰らう十二ヵ月』 — will be screened at the first-floor hall of the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum. In addition, at the first-floor Café From Top, you can enjoy the exhibition’s collaboration menu, including “Watermelon Cake” and a one-plate dish of duck rice and pumpkin soup. Furthermore, at “WINE MARKET PARTY” on the basement first floor of Ebisu Garden Place, special offers are available for visitors who present a ticket for this exhibition. Recommended for “TOP Collection: Tomorrow’s Dining Table” is an exhibition that, through photography and video, reflects on meals with family, the ties between communities and food, the natural environment, and the dining table of the future. As it presents a wide range of works on the theme of food, it is suitable not only for those interested in photographic works, but also for those who wish to view everyday memories and social change from a new perspective. It is also recommended for those who want to enjoy a cultural experience in Tokyo alongside sightseeing, shopping, and dining in the Ebisu area. Exhibition view Photo: いしかわみちこ Exhibition view Photo: いしかわみちこ ※ Closed on Mondays during the exhibition period. However, if Monday is a national holiday, the museum will be open and closed on the following weekday. ※ Programs are subject to change due to various circumstances.
