A history and culture museum where you can experience the transformation of the city and people’s lives, from the streets of Edo to modern Tokyo
【Edo-Tokyo Museum】
Located in Sumida City, Tokyo, the "Edo-Tokyo Museum" is a place where you can enjoy learning about the city’s transition from Edo to Tokyo, as well as people’s daily lives and culture.
The vast permanent exhibition area of about 9,000 m² consists of the "Edo Zone," "Tokyo Zone," and "Special Exhibition Room." Highlights include a full-scale reconstruction of Nihonbashi, large models recreating the streets and buildings of the time, and authentic historical materials that convey the past.
Through models and exhibits, you can trace the changes of each era in a tangible, three-dimensional way—from the townspeople culture of the Edo period, through the modernization of the Meiji era, to contemporary urban life.
In addition, approachable hands-on materials and exhibits utilizing digital technology are incorporated, allowing even those not well-versed in history to enjoy and appreciate the charms of Edo-Tokyo.
This spot is recommended not only for those interested in Japanese history and culture, but also for travelers who want to gain deeper insight into the city’s background while sightseeing in Tokyo.
Top 3 Highlights
1. An immersive exhibition space that begins with a life-size Nihonbashi
One of the major highlights of the permanent exhibition gallery is a life-size reconstruction of Nihonbashi (the northern half is reproduced). The exhibition begins as you cross the bridge and continues to scale models that recreate Edo-period streets and daimyo residences.
Through finely crafted scale models, you can visually grasp the city's structure centered on Edo Castle and the differences between the lives of samurai and townspeople. The three-dimensional displays let you experience the look of the city at the time in a way that text and photos alone cannot convey.

2. A permanent exhibition tracing Tokyo’s transformation from Edo to today
The permanent exhibition is organized mainly around the “Edo Zone,” which introduces the city and culture of Edo, and the “Tokyo Zone,” which covers Tokyo from the Meiji era to the present.
In addition to Edo-period towns and culture, it presents a wide range of themes, including changes brought by modernization, as well as modern and contemporary urban landscapes and everyday life. By comparing materials and models from each era, you can learn from multiple perspectives how today’s Tokyo took shape.
Because you can enjoy the history of Edo–Tokyo as a single narrative, it is also recommended for overseas travelers experiencing Japanese culture for the first time.

3. More ways to enjoy: special, thematic, and hands-on exhibitions
At the Edo–Tokyo Museum, in addition to the permanent exhibition, special, planned, and feature exhibitions on a variety of themes are also held.
In the Special Exhibition Gallery on the first floor, special exhibitions cover a wide range of themes, including the history and culture of Edo–Tokyo. In the Planned Exhibition Room and the feature display corner within the Permanent Exhibition Gallery, you can enjoy exhibitions focused on themes related to the permanent display and the museum’s collection.
There are also engaging hands-on materials and initiatives that make use of digital technology. Not only can you view the exhibits, but you can also experience Edo–Tokyo culture from multiple angles, making it perfect for family outings and curiosity-sparking sightseeing.

Taking as its starting point the film 『日曜日の散歩者』 (2015; released in Japan in 2017), which depicts the modernist poetry group 「風車詩社」 formed in Taiwan in the 1930s, the exhibition introduces exchanges and points of contact in the cultural arts of modern Taiwan and Japan. With the film’s director, 黄亜歴(ホアン・ヤーリー), as guest curator, it presents works and materials across genres—including painting, sculpture, printmaking, and photography, as well as literature, film, music, theater, and dance. Exhibition Highlights A large-scale presentation of modern Taiwanese art Drawing from more than 15 museums in Taiwan and from private collections, the exhibition presents around 200 works of modern Taiwanese art, along with approximately 500 materials such as books, magazines, letters, notes, and albums. About 100 works from Japan are also included, offering an opportunity to consider how the arts and cultures of Taiwan and Japan have intertwined. An exhibition space informed by film-editing methods The display is structured in six chapters, combining visual art, literature, film, music, theater, and dance in a montage-like manner. In the space designed by the Taiwan-based architectural unit “UxU Studio,” reflective materials and maze-like circulation create an experience that not only invites viewing the works but also immerses visitors in multiple interrelationships. Reexamining the past from a contemporary perspective The exhibition approaches the diverse artists and cultural practices that existed in modern Taiwan and Japan not as a single linear history, but as relationships linked like constellations. Through encounters with works and documents, visitors can feel past events as part of their present experience and reflect on their own gaze and ways of seeing history. Recommended for This exhibition is recommended for those interested in the modern art of Taiwan and Japan, and for anyone who wants to enjoy a wide range of arts—not only painting but also literature, film, and music. While in Tokyo, as you engage with Taiwanese culture and the arts, why not experience a world of expression that connects across time and national borders? 陳澄波《A View of Chiayi Park》1934 Private collection 楊三郎《Miss Paris》[Woman of Paris]1932 Yang San-lang Art Museum collection ※Various related programs are planned.
