A spiritual power spot in Tokyo where you can feel the atmosphere of Japanese culture and the beauty of the four seasons
【亀戸天神社】
Kameido Tenjinja is a shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane and has long been affectionately known as “亀戸の天神さま” and “亀戸天満宮.” Regarded as the “Eastern Dazaifu Tenmangu” in relation to Kyushu’s Dazaifu Tenmangu, it is revered by many as the deity of learning. The grounds burst with flowers in every season, and are especially famed for plum and wisteria, bringing peace to the hearts of visitors.
3 Recommended Highlights
1. Beautiful flowers in every season
Within the shrine grounds, more than 250 plum trees are planted, and from early February to early March the red and white blossoms are in full bloom. In addition, from mid to late April, over 50 wisteria plants bloom all at once, and their reflections on Shinji Pond captivate many people as “Tokyo’s foremost wisteria spot.” From late October to late November, the Chrysanthemum Festival decorating the front of the main hall is held, allowing you to enjoy the beauty of various flowers throughout the year.
2. Three purifying bridges and the sacred ox
The three arched drum bridges over Shinji Pond each represent the past, present, and future; crossing them purifies body and mind as you proceed to the sacred altar. The statue of the sacred ox to the left as you face the main hall is said to cure illness and grant wisdom when touched. Due to the deep connection between Sugawara no Michizane, the god of learning, and oxen, many worshippers touch this sacred ox and offer prayers.
3. Traditional festivals and annual events
At Kameido Tenjin Shrine, various festivals and annual events are held throughout the year. In January, the “Uso-kae ritual” turns misfortune into good fortune, and in February, during the “Setsubun Tsuina Festival,” lucky beans are scattered. In August, the “Grand Festival & Lantern Dedication,” adorned with many lanterns, is held, enveloping the shrine in a magical atmosphere. These events are valuable opportunities to experience traditional Japanese culture.
