A soothing oasis with an exotic atmosphere in the heart of Tokyo

A soothing power spot in Tokyo where tradition and innovation intertwine
【Tsukiji Hongwanji】

Located in the heart of Tokyo, right next to the Tsukiji Market, Tsukiji Hongwanji captivates visitors with its distinctive architectural style.

Its exterior, modeled after ancient Buddhist architecture of Asia such as India, was designed by architectural historian Dr. Chuta Ito, and adorned with stained glass and numerous animal sculptures, evoking an exotic atmosphere as if you were traveling along the Silk Road.

Inside the main hall, a spacious worship area and the principal image of Amida Nyorai enshrined at the center stand out; while retaining the form of a traditional Shin Buddhist temple, in 2014 the main hall, stone wall, and the gate pillars of the three gates were designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan.

This open temple is a special, soothing place not only for local residents but also for visitors from Japan and abroad.

※Tsukiji Hongwanji is currently undergoing construction, scheduled through around December 2026.
As a result, it may be difficult to photograph the exterior during this period. We apologize for the inconvenience; the temple remains open for worship as usual during the construction period, and we look forward to your visit.

1. One-of-a-kind architectural beauty

The greatest appeal of Tsukiji Hongwanji is its magnificent and distinctive architecture. The exterior incorporates elements of ancient Indian Buddhist style, which is extremely rare for a Japanese temple, and carvings of animals such as elephants, lions, and peacocks can be seen throughout. The beautiful stained glass at the entrance to the main hall casts a magical glow whenever light streams in, captivating visitors. This space, where Eastern and Western cultures converge, can truly be called a work of art.

2. A culinary experience that nourishes mind and body

Within the precincts are ample facilities designed to soothe the minds and bodies of visitors. In particular, at Cafe Tsumugi, the “18-item breakfast” inspired by Amida Nyorai’s Eighteen Vows is especially popular. At the Japanese restaurant “Shisui,” you can savor traditional Japanese cuisine and soba made with seasonal ingredients, and at the tea lounge you can enjoy light meals and sweets in a relaxing space. During your visit, be sure to enjoy a dining experience unique to Tsukiji Hongwanji.

3. Cultural events and community exchange

Tsukiji Hongwanji hosts a variety of cultural events throughout the year. Among them, the monthly “Pipe Organ Concert” enchants many people as the solemn tones produced by approximately 2,566 pipes resonate through the main hall. This pipe organ is designed with the six characters of “Namu Amida Butsu,” central to Jodo Shinshu, as its motif, allowing you to feel the Buddha’s teachings through sound. There are also many seasonal observances such as the New Year’s Day service, Hanamatsuri (Flower Festival), Bon Odori, and Hōonkō, providing warm opportunities for interaction between local residents and visitors.
