Kitasenju public bathhouse | The Japanese garden’s engawa and herbal baths are popular

A soothing sento spot where you can encounter Tokyo’s shitamachi charm and warm bathing culture
タカラ湯

In a quiet residential neighborhood a short walk from Kitasenju Station in Adachi, Tokyo, lies Takara-yu, a renowned bathhouse known among sento fans as the “King of Engawa” and the “King of Gardens”.

The stately architecture that preserves traces of the early Showa era and the splendid Japanese garden together create a scene that instantly transports visitors to a world beyond the everyday.

In its prized Japanese garden, you can watch elegant koi swimming and seasonal flowers, beginning with May azaleas; cooling off on the engawa after a bath is pure bliss.

A beloved gathering place for local residents, it has also, thanks to its charming presence, served as a filming location for the TV series “Kamen Rider Revice” and been featured in numerous magazines and guidebooks, drawing attention from both Japan and abroad.

1. The awe-inspiring "King of Engawa" and Japanese garden

The greatest charm of Takarayu is its splendid Japanese garden. From the men's changing room, you can gaze through the full-length glass at the pond's koi and seasonal flowers. Every Wednesday, the men’s and women’s baths swap, so female guests can also enjoy this magnificent "King of Engawa."

Other recommendations

The charms of Takarayu are found even in the details.
🔸Soaring ceilings and a relaxing lobby
The bathhouse ceiling rises to about 7 meters, featuring a paneled design with alternating wood grains.
After your bath, relax in the spacious lobby or on the veranda while enjoying garden views. You may even find yourself mingling with locals.
🔸Thoughtfully designed facilities for men and women
The men’s changing area faces the garden with floor-to-ceiling glass, offering the luxury of changing while watching colorful koi. The women’s changing area is larger and well equipped with amenities such as massage chairs; in the small courtyard, medaka fish swim—touches that many women will appreciate.
Both bath areas are equipped with essentials like hair dryers and scales, so you can visit empty-handed with peace of mind.
