A world of glass where the tradition of Edo Kiriko shines, fusing craftsmanship and hands-on experiences

A cultural experience spot in Sumida, Tokyo where you can encounter Edo elegance and craftsmanship
すみだ和ガラス館

Located in Sumida, Tokyo, just a 4-minute walk from Kinshicho Station, the "Sumida Wa Glass Museum" is a facility that exhibits items from the collection of Hirota Glass Co., Ltd., one of Tokyo's most historic glass manufacturers founded in Meiji 32 (1899). Here, through precious wa glass and related materials collected over Hirota Glass’s 126-year history, you can feel the evolution of Japanese glass tableware.
"Wa glass" refers to artworks elevated by the Japanese aesthetic sense of harmony, gentleness, and tranquility. After the Meiji Restoration, while incorporating Western techniques, a unique glass culture was born from the fusion of Japanese culture and craftsmen’s dedication. Even today, when mass production is the mainstream, under Hirota Glass’s wish to deliver warm glass that appeals to human sensibilities, the traditional techniques of Edo Kiriko and Edo glass have been continuously passed down. This place is not only a museum but also a cultural hub where you can "view, experience, and feel" the charm of wa glass, with a directly managed store and workshop space.

1. Traditional craftsmanship carried forward with a modern spirit

The traditional techniques of Edo Kiriko and Edo glass, handed down unbroken here in Sumida by master artisans, form the foundation of product making at 廣田硝子. The spirit of “和ガラス,” which elevates Western techniques through a Japanese sensibility, lives on in the dedication of artisans who continue to craft each piece by hand. Experience the evocative beauty of glass where tradition and contemporary design converge.

2. An integrated facility for viewing, purchasing, and hands-on experiences

Sumida Waglass Kan is a multifaceted complex where you can enjoy the appeal of 和ガラス from multiple perspectives.
• 3F 廣田硝子 和ガラス美術館: A museum where you can view valuable pieces from the collection (by reservation only).
• 1F 廣田硝子 直営店: Japan’s only directly managed store, offering both new releases and classics; see items in person and purchase.
• 4F 和ガラス研究室: Get hands-on with 和ガラス through occasional workshops, such as maneki‑neko painting.

3. The profound depth of “和ガラス” told by over 120 years of history

In addition to products made by 廣田硝子, exhibits include vintage glass collected personally by the chairman, molding dies that speak to the history of glassmaking, and specialized publications. The many nostalgic items sold since around the 1930s quietly tell how glass has accompanied everyday life in Japan. See up close the artisans’ skills and the “warmth” of glass loved across generations.
