A Tokyo sento spot that breathes warmth and peace of mind into everyday life
【黄金湯】

Located in Taihei, Sumida City, Tokyo, “Koganeyu” has been a sento supporting the public health of local residents since its founding in 1932. As the sister bathhouse of “Daikokuyu,” a representative of Tokyo’s shitamachi area, the owner couple, the Shimbos, have continually pursued a “new style of sento,” and carried out a major renovation in 2020. While retaining the traditional character of a sento, it offers many attractions: an uncompromising focus on water quality, a front desk combined with a beer bar, a Maifan-stone sauna with a 90 cm-deep cold plunge, and sento murals painted by artists. Koganeyu aims to bring sento culture to more people and carry it forward into the future.

1. Meticulously refined water quality and diverse baths

At 黄金湯, “ultra-soft water”—groundwater further treated by a softening system—gives the bath a silky, skin-friendly feel. To suit everyone from small children to lovers of very hot water, the bath area offers three tubs at different temperatures: 「あつ湯(43〜44℃)」、「薬湯(40℃)」、「炭酸泉(36℃)」。 While gazing at a beautiful Mt. Fuji bathhouse mural painted by manga artist ほしよりこ, enjoy a luxurious bathing experience you can’t have at home.

2. Thoughtfully designed saunas and an open-air cooling area

The men’s bath features an 「オートロウリュサウナ」 made with domestically sourced hiba wood and Maifan stone, encouraging deep sweating through radiant heat and steam. Right in front of the sauna is a dedicated cold plunge, 90 cm deep at 15℃. The women’s bath offers a 「セルフロウリュサウナ」 made with domestic hinoki (Japanese cypress), where you can enjoy pleasant aromas and sounds with daily changing aromatic water. Paired with a liberating outdoor air-bathing space, both saunas deliver the ultimate 「ととのう」 experience that refreshes body and mind.

3. Facilities that go beyond a typical sento

黄金湯 is more than just a public bath. At the front desk illuminated by an iconic large paper lantern, there’s a beer bar serving original craft brews and a DJ booth, letting you enjoy post-bath moments with music. On the second floor, an accommodation area with dormitory-style Japanese and Western rooms allows you to stay right after your bath or sauna. In addition, there’s authentic 「電力整体」, fully private-room 「アカスリ」 services, and 「コガネキッチン」 where you can enjoy items like 「ロウリュコーヒー」 and 「ラムラムキーマ」. It’s packed with diverse attractions that transcend the bounds of a traditional sento.
