Encounter, in the heart of the city, the soul-cleansing “Tenjin of the East”

A Tokyo power spot where you can feel the grace of Japanese culture and the beauty of the four seasons
Kameido Tenjin Shrine

Kameido Tenjin Shrine, dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, has long been affectionately known as “Kameido no Tenjin-sama” and “Kameido Tenmangu.” As the eastern counterpart to Dazaifu Tenmangu in Kyushu, it is also called the “Eastern Dazaifu Tenmangu,” and is widely revered as the deity of learning. The precincts are filled with flowers throughout the seasons, and it is especially renowned for its plums and wisteria, which soothe the hearts of visitors.

1. Beautiful seasonal flowers

Over 250 plum trees are planted within the precincts, with red and white blossoms in full bloom from early February to early March. From mid to late April, more than 50 wisteria plants bloom all at once, and their reflection in 心字池 captivates many as “Tokyo’s premier wisteria spot.” From late October to late November, the Chrysanthemum Festival colors the front of the main hall, allowing you to enjoy the beauty of various flowers throughout the year.

2. Three purifying bridges and the sacred ox

The three drum bridges over 心字池 each represent the past, present, and future; crossing them purifies body and mind as you proceed toward the sacred front. In addition, the statue of the sacred ox to the left when facing the main hall is said to heal illness and grant wisdom when touched with affection. Owing to the deep bond between Sugawara no Michizane, the god of learning, and oxen, many worshippers touch this sacred ox and offer prayers.

3. Traditional festivals and annual events

Throughout the year, Kameido Tenjin Shrine hosts various festivals and annual events. In January, the Uso-kae ritual turns misfortune into good fortune; in February, beans are scattered during the Setsubun Tsuinasai. In August, the Grand Festival and Lantern Offering takes place, with numerous lanterns adorning the grounds and creating a magical atmosphere. These events are valuable opportunities to experience traditional Japanese culture.
