An interactive, community-oriented toy museum that captivates everyone from babies to adults
【Tokyo Toy Museum】
Located in Yotsuya, Shinjuku, Tokyo, the Tokyo Toy Museum is a special place where people of all ages, from children to adults, can experience new discoveries and excitement through "play." In a unique space that repurposes the gymnasium of a closed elementary school, a wide variety of toys collected from around the world are exhibited, offering visitors the joy of creativity and connection.
The museum emphasizes not just looking, but actually touching with your hands and playing with all five senses. In particular, it focuses on warm wooden toys and analog games that foster communication, helping visitors rediscover the value of "real play" often forgotten in the digital age. Here, you can forget the hustle and bustle of the city and immerse yourself in the world of "play" to your heart's content—an experience like no other.
Top 3 Highlights
1. Meet the "Play Guides": Toy Curators
At the Tokyo Toy Museum, “toy curators” ranging in age from their teens to their 80s serve as bridges connecting visitors with toys—and with one another. As "play guides", they share the fun of toys and ways to play with visitors of all generations, from babies to seniors, through handmade toys, traditional games, and read-aloud storytelling.
They also take part in activities that broaden the scope of play through exchanges with peers who share the same skills and hobbies and by assisting at events. Encounters with these red‑aproned guides will enrich your play experience.
2. “Baby Wood Education Plaza” exclusively for ages 0–2
The “Baby Wood Education Plaza,” a warm, wood-filled space that only children aged 0–2 and their guardians may enter, is a special area designed with safety in mind. Solid cedar from 10 regions across Japan is used, providing warmth without the need for floor heating, so little ones can safely play while experiencing the beauty and characteristics of wood. Entry operates on a one-hour rotation to ensure a relaxed visit.
3. Handmade Crafting Experience that Nurtures Creativity
At the “Toy Workshop,” under the concept “The fun of toys is creating them yourself!”, handmade toys using familiar materials such as paper cups and milk cartons are introduced. Choose from a daily-changing menu selected from hundreds of types to create a one-of-a-kind toy. In addition, in the dedicated power scroll saw room “Itonokoya,” for 4th-grade elementary students and older (adults welcome), you can experience making authentic wooden toys using domestically produced wood from regions across Japan and deeply savor the joy of craftsmanship.
