A “matchmaking” shrine embraced by lush greenery that makes you forget the bustle of the city

A soul-cleansing power spot where you encounter tranquility and history in the heart of Tokyo
赤坂氷川神社

Located in the very center of the metropolis, in Akasaka, Minato City, Tokyo, Akasaka Hikawa Shrine is enveloped in lush greenery and serenity the moment you step inside.

With over a thousand years of history since its enshrinement, it is cherished by locals and many worshippers for its strong traditions of warding off misfortune and matchmaking.

The main shrine hall erected by Tokugawa Yoshimune miraculously escaped numerous earthquakes and wartime destruction, preserving its original appearance to this day, and it is designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Tokyo.

Within the precincts, torii gates, guardian lion-dogs, and stone lanterns engraved with Edo-era dates still remain, creating a captivating space where history and nature are in harmony, preserving many rare Edo-period scenes within Tokyo.

1. Valuable architecture and scenery that preserve the Edo-period appearance

The main shrine building of Akasaka Hikawa Shrine retains the same appearance as when it was built in Kyōhō 14 (1729) in the mid-Edo period. Walking around the precincts, you will find many heritage items that evoke history, such as stone monuments and lanterns engraved with Edo-era dates and seven pairs of guardian lion-dog statues, making you feel as if you have slipped back in time to the Edo period.

2. A “sacred grove” surrounded by lush greenery

The precincts are so richly surrounded by trees that you can forget the bustle of the city. The trees, including a great ginkgo over 400 years old, show different faces with each season and offer visitors healing and peace. Worshipping while feeling the breath of nature becomes a special time that refreshes both body and mind.

3. Blessings for matchmaking and monthly worship

As it enshrines the married deities Susanoo-no-Mikoto and Kushinadahime-no-Mikoto, as well as Ōnamuchi-no-Mikoto, it is known for strong blessings of matchmaking. From the first day of each month, the monthly-visit goshuin “Kasane” is offered, and the once-a-month “matchmaking worship” is supported by many people who wish for good relationships.
