A famed Meiji-era garden in Ryogoku
【旧安田庭園】

Located just a short distance from JR Ryogoku Station, Kyu Yasuda Garden offers a quiet and tranquil atmosphere. Once a tidal strolling garden fed by the Sumida River, it was designed so that the scenery changed with the ebb and flow of the tide. Today the water level is adjusted artificially by pumps, but its beautiful landscape is still loved by many and it has been designated a scenic spot by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. Centered on Shinji-ike, a pond shaped like the kanji for “heart” (心), it is a precious urban oasis where you can fully savor the traditional beauty of Japanese gardens.

1. The beautiful scenery of the “心字池” pond shaped like the character “心”

At the center of the garden lies “心字池,” modeled after the shape of the kanji “心.” While taking a leisurely stroll around the pond, you can enjoy its beautiful form from various angles. The trees and sky reflected on the water’s surface show different expressions with every visit, bringing peace to the heart.

2. Seasonal scenery and nighttime illumination

Former Yasuda Garden welcomes visitors with different charms in each season. From spring to summer there is fresh greenery; from autumn to winter, autumn leaves and snow supports let you feel the transitions of the four seasons firsthand. After sunset, the garden is illuminated, enveloping it in a fantastical atmosphere distinct from daytime. It is also an ideal spot for a cool evening or a nighttime stroll.

3. Strolling the surrounding area to experience culture and history

Adjacent to the garden is the “Japanese Sword Museum,” where you can appreciate the beauty of swords, a traditional Japanese craft. By combining a garden stroll with visits to nearby cultural sites, you can experience Tokyo’s charm more deeply.
