A soothing power spot in Tokyo where tradition and innovation intertwine
【築地本願寺】
Located in the heart of Tokyo, right next to Tsukiji Market, Tsukiji Hongwanji captivates visitors with its distinctive architectural style.
Its exterior, modeled on ancient Buddhist architecture of Asia such as India and designed by architectural historian Dr. Chuta Ito, is adorned with stained glass and numerous animal sculptures, evoking an exotic atmosphere as if traveling the Silk Road.
The interior of the main hall is characterized by a spacious worship area and the principal image of Amitabha Buddha enshrined at the center; while preserving the traditional layout of a Jodo Shinshu temple, in 2014 the main hall and stone fence, as well as the gate pillars of the Sanmon, were designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan.
This open temple is a special, calming place not only for local residents but also for visitors from across Japan and overseas.
※Tsukiji Hongwanji is currently undergoing construction, scheduled until around December 2026.
As a result, photographing the exterior may be difficult during this period. We apologize for any inconvenience; the temple remains open for worship as usual during the construction period, and we look forward to your visit。
3 Recommended Highlights
1. One-of-a-kind architectural beauty
The greatest appeal of 築地本願寺 lies in its magnificent and distinctive architecture. The exterior, which incorporates ancient Indian Buddhist style, is extremely rare for a Japanese temple, and carvings of animals such as elephants, lions, and peacocks can be seen throughout. The beautiful stained glass at the entrance to the main hall emits a magical glow whenever light shines through, captivating visitors. This space where Eastern and Western cultures blend can truly be called a work of art.
2. Food experiences that nourish body and mind
Within the precincts are ample facilities designed to soothe the minds and bodies of visitors. In particular, at Café Tsumugi, the “18-item breakfast,” inspired by the Eighteen Vows of Amida Nyorai, is very popular. In addition, at the Japanese restaurant “Shisui,” you can savor traditional Japanese cuisine and soba made with seasonal ingredients, and in the tea lounge you can enjoy light meals and sweets in a relaxed setting. Between visits, be sure to enjoy the culinary experiences unique to 築地本願寺。
3. Cultural and community events
Throughout the year, 築地本願寺 hosts a variety of cultural events. Among them, the monthly “Pipe Organ Concert” enchants many people as the solemn tones produced by approximately 2566 pipes resonate through the main hall. This pipe organ is designed with the six characters of “南無阿弥陀仏,” the principal devotion of Jodo Shinshu, allowing you to feel the Buddha’s teachings through sound. In addition, there are many seasonal events such as 元旦会, 花まつり, 盆踊り, and 報恩講, providing a warm place for interaction between local residents and visitors.
