A popular teahouse just a short walk from Shinjuku Gyoen
『御苑茶屋ZUZU 新宿御苑前店』
Today we’re introducing 『御苑茶屋ZUZU 新宿御苑前店』. Located right in front of Shinjuku Gyoen’s Okido Gate, the teahouse offers homemade sweets such as dango and warabi mochi, as well as kamameshi and ochazuke made with carefully selected ingredients.
As you step inside, a calm, Japanese-inspired space welcomes you. You can enter with a stroller and, by moving a chair, take a seat, and there is also one chair for small children available. It’s also perfect to drop by as a rest spot after enjoying a stroll in the gardens.
At Gyoen Chaya ZUZU Shinjuku Gyoen-mae, the popular menu item is kamameshi chazuke. Starting with the classic "Red Salmon and Salmon Roe Oyako Kamameshi Chazuke Gozen" (1,780 yen), there are also options like "Snow Crab, Hokkaido Scallop, and Salmon Roe Kamameshi Chazuke" (2,580 yen) and "Luxurious Kamameshi Chazuke with Grilled Eel (Kabayaki) and Burdock" (1,980 yen), featuring indulgent seafood. Seasonal autumn-only items also appear, so you can enjoy kamameshi chazuke all year round.
At Gyoen Chaya ZUZU, we use "Tsuyahime" from Yamagata Prefecture processed with the Kinmemai method for our kamameshi.
Kinmemai is a health-conscious rice that, thanks to a proprietary "uniform-pressure polishing method," retains the umami and nutrients that are usually lost during conventional milling. It preserves a nutritional value close to brown rice while still allowing you to fully taste the sweetness and deliciousness of white rice.
At Gyoen Chaya ZUZU Shinjuku Gyoen-mae, strollers are of course welcome, and a child’s chair is provided. They also have small spoons, forks, and cups to make it easier for little ones to eat. On days when you want to relax and enjoy a delicious lunch or tea while being soothed by the greenery of Shinjuku Gyoen, why not pay a visit?
