700th Anniversary Commemorative Special Exhibition 'Daitokuji: Japan's Unrivaled Zen Monastery'
700th Anniversary Commemorative Special Exhibition 「大徳寺 本朝無双之禅苑」 The special exhibition 「大徳寺 本朝無双之禅苑」, commemorating the 700th anniversary of 大徳寺 in Murasakino, Kyoto, will be held at the Heiseikan, Tokyo National Museum. Since its founding in 1326, 大徳寺 has developed through deep connections with generations of eminent monks, emperors, Sengoku warlords, and tea masters. This exhibition brings together the temple treasures from within the 大徳寺 precincts, including its sub-temples and temples of the 大徳寺 school, to present 700 years of history and culture. Highlights of the Exhibition 14 National Treasures and 69 Important Cultural Properties on display It has been 41 years since an exhibition bringing together the treasures of 大徳寺 was last held, and this is the first time in Tokyo. Invaluable works that convey the history of Zen and art will be exhibited, including the National Treasure 「観音猿鶴図」, the Important Cultural Property 「龍虎図」, and the National Treasure 「看読真詮榜」 by 宗峰妙超. Some works will be rotated between the first and second halves. The first half runs from Wednesday, October 14 to Sunday, November 8, and the second half runs from Tuesday, November 10 to Sunday, December 6. Recreated display of the Sanmon, usually closed to the public The venue will feature a recreated display of the Sanmon at 大徳寺, which is usually not open to the public. The principal image 「釈迦如来坐像」 enshrined in the Sanmon and the first-time public display 「千利休立像」 will also be exhibited throughout. This display allows visitors to feel the connections between 大徳寺, Zen, and the tea ceremony. Figures connected to 大徳寺 and 700 years of history Works related to figures closely connected to 大徳寺, such as 一休宗純、後醍醐天皇、織田信長、豊臣秀吉, will also be introduced. Through the faith and involvement that successive eminent monks, rulers, and tea masters placed in 大徳寺, you can trace the history of Japanese Zen culture. Recommended for This exhibition is recommended not only for those interested in Zen and Japanese art, but also for those interested in Kyoto’s temple culture and the history of the tea ceremony. At the Tokyo National Museum, why not experience the 700 years of beauty and spirit that Daitoku-ji has passed down? ※ Exhibited works, exhibition periods, opening hours, closing days, and admission procedures may change. Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum 100th Anniversary: The British Museum Japanese Art Collection — A Riot of Flowers 〜 Edo Paintings Across the Seas
Special Exhibition Edo paintings that captivated the world come together! 「A Riot of Flowers—Edo Paintings that Crossed the Seas」 At the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, the commemorative exhibition 「The British Museum Japanese Art Collection—A Riot of Flowers: Edo Paintings that Crossed the Seas」 is being held to mark the museum’s 100th anniversary. This exhibition showcases carefully selected masterpieces—including Edo-period paintings and ukiyo-e prints—from the British Museum’s approximately 40,000-piece Japanese collection, held by one of the world’s leading museums. Works by leading Edo-period ukiyo-e artists such as Katsushika Hokusai, Kitagawa Utamaro, Utagawa Hiroshige, and Tōshūsai Sharaku will be on view, along with rare pieces returning to Japan from the United Kingdom for the first time. Highlights of the Exhibition POINT 01 Masterpieces of Japanese art from the British Museum Carefully selected folding screens, hanging scrolls, handscrolls, and ukiyo-e prints from the Edo period are on view from the British Museum’s Japanese collection. Highlights include Kitagawa Utamaro’s hand-painted work 《文読む遊女》, Maruyama Ōkyo’s 《虎の子渡し図屛風》, and Katsushika Hokusai’s 《『万物絵本大全』版下絵》, which you can enjoy up close. POINT 02 Hokusai works making their first homecoming from the UK Katsushika Hokusai’s 《『万物絵本大全』版下絵》 is returning to Japan from the United Kingdom for the first time. This exhibition presents 8 of the 103 printing-design drawings that had long been missing. POINT 03 Fusuma paintings reunited after about 150 years Also noteworthy are the fusuma-e created by 狩野宗眼重信 from the late Momoyama to the early Edo period. Works that had been divided between the British Museum and the Miyakoshi family, an old household in Nakasato, Aomori Prefecture, were identified through recent research as parts of a single series. They will be reunited for the first time in roughly 150 years. Recommended for Recommended for those interested in Japanese art and ukiyo-e, those who wish to view works by artists such as Katsushika Hokusai and Kitagawa Utamaro in person, and those looking for an exhibition in Tokyo where they can experience history and culture. As it is held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum in Ueno Park, we also recommend enjoying it together with nearby museums and sightseeing spots. Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum: The Scenery of This Place—Ueno, Ōmuta, Buenos Aires
Special Exhibition Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum "Landscapes of This Place—Ueno, Ōmuta, Buenos Aires" Now Open An exhibition that looks at 100 years from three places To mark the 100th anniversary of the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum’s opening, the special exhibition "Landscapes of This Place—Ueno, Ōmuta, Buenos Aires" is being held. The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum opened in 1926 in Ueno Park, Tokyo, as Japan’s first public art museum. Its name at the time was "Tokyo Prefectural Art Museum." This exhibition reflects on the museum’s 100-year journey through creative activities carried out in three places: Ueno, Ōmuta, and Buenos Aires. It follows the history of the museum alongside the scenery of Ueno; the path of a painter who continued to work self-taught in Ōmuta, Fukuoka; and research in Buenos Aires, Argentina, sparked by a single painting made in 1926. By tracing different places and individual practices in parallel, the exhibition moves beyond the "center/periphery" framework to contemplate the fundamental meaning of artistic expression. Highlights of the Exhibition PART 01 A century of "Ueno" revisited through diverse materials Part I, "Ueno—100 Years of the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum," presents a wide range of records, including paintings, prints, photographs, and materials from the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum Archives. It looks back from the birth of the Tokyo (Prefectural) Art Museum, through wartime and postwar years, to activities after the opening of the new building in 1975, alongside views of Ueno from the same periods. From multiple perspectives, you can trace both the history of exhibitions held at the museum and the ways Ueno has transformed as a cultural place. PART 02 The creative trajectory of the self-taught painter Shigeo Egami introduced in Tokyo for the first time Part II, "Ōmuta—100 Years of Shigeo Egami," focuses on the work of Shigeo Egami (1912–2014), who lived in Ōmuta, Fukuoka Prefecture, and steadfastly painted as a self-taught, independent artist. Using familiar materials such as pencil, watercolor, and oil pastel/crayon, Egami continued to engage with the landscapes close at hand. Through around 400 works—including woodcuts, experimental abstract paintings, and dyed-paper pieces—the exhibition traces his long creative path. This is the first opportunity for Egami’s works to be presented in Tokyo in a comprehensive manner. PART 03 A research project starting from 《The Zinnia Garden》 Starting from the painting 《The Zinnia Garden》, regarded as the first item in the collection of the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, this research project pursues the mysteries surrounding the presumed author “藤岡鉄太郎.” Focusing on a person with the same name who went to Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1927 and worked in the landscaping and floriculture industries, we trace the trajectories of the work and the individual across 100 years. In addition, based on flower photographs collected through a public call, we will produce a page-a-day calendar for 2027. Recommended for Recommended for those interested in the history of the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum and the cultural landscape of Ueno, and for those who wish to carefully appreciate the works of the self-taught painter 江上茂雄. It is also suitable for those interested not only in the works themselves but also in the creators, the places where the works were born, and the activities of individuals buried in history. For domestic and international travelers visiting Ueno, it will be an opportunity to learn about Tokyo’s museum culture while encountering stories of creation that connect Japan and overseas. National Museum of Nature and Science × Research Institute for Humanity and Nature Joint Special Exhibition "What Shall We Do, Humans? — Questioning Earth’s Future from the Frontlines of Research"
Special Exhibition National Museum of Nature and Science×Research Institute for Humanity and Nature Joint Exhibition “What Shall We Do, Humans―Questioning the Future of the Earth from the Frontlines of Research” Considering the future of the Earth and humanity through “What Shall We Do, Humans” At the National Museum of Nature and Science, the joint exhibition with the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature, “What Shall We Do, Humans — Questioning the Future of the Earth from the Frontlines of Research,” is being held. This exhibition views global environmental issues as matters of “the relationship between people and nature” and “ways of human life,” and introduces research cases and activities that the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature has pursued to date. It is an exhibition that provides an opportunity to reconsider our relationship with the Earth. Exhibition Highlights POINT 01 Introduced in three chapters: “Noticing,” “Reframing,” and “Keep Questioning” The exhibition is structured in three chapters—“Noticing,” “Reframing,” and “Keep Questioning.” Starting from familiar aspects such as the things we use and eat in daily life and where we live, it turns our attention to the “connections between people and nature” and seeks clues to the roots of environmental issues and their solutions. Furthermore, through initiatives of people confronting environmental problems around the world, it invites reflection on the question, “How shall we live?” POINT 02 Four transdisciplinary research projects in the Central Hall In the Central Hall’s “Forest of Questions,” four transdisciplinary research projects are presented, conducted with tropical rainforest hunter-gatherers; island residents of coral reefs together with artists; people in satoyama regions; and people in desertification areas alongside researchers. It is an exhibition where you can think about the global environment while talking with researchers and writing down your own ideas. POINT 03 A casual chance to talk with researchers: “かたろう、ニンゲン” Within the venue, the program 「対話の縁側『かたろう、ニンゲン』」, where researchers from various fields at 地球研 stay on site during the period, is also being held. You can casually talk with researchers about the exhibits, daily life, and the environment, and also join mini-programs. From September 8 (Tue) to 13 (Sun), researchers will be present with the theme 「Humans and Nature Living Together: SATOYAMA」; from September 15 (Tue) to 23 (Wed, holiday), the theme will be 「How to Protect Wildlife」. Researchers will be present from 10:00–11:30 and 14:00–15:30. ※There may be times when researchers are absent or programs are canceled. POINT 04 Related events also taking place During the exhibition period, related events that let you enjoy the exhibits more deeply—such as talks by researchers and theater performances—are also being held. Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum 100th Anniversary: Swedish Painting — Nordic Light, Everyday Radiance
100% Sweden! An exhibition bringing together masterpieces of Swedish painting. This exhibition offers a full-fledged introduction to paintings from the golden age of Swedish art, which have drawn global attention in recent years. With the full cooperation of the Nationalmuseum, Sweden, it approaches the uniquely Nordic sensibility of living richly in harmony with nature through captivating paintings created in Sweden from the late 19th to the early 20th century. This will be the first special exhibition commemorating a milestone year for the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, which celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2026. [Highlights of the exhibition] 1. 100% Sweden!—Exploring the uniquely Nordic sensibility of living richly with nature All works on display are by Swedish artists. The works express Sweden’s austere yet abundant nature and a warm gaze toward everyday life. With the keywords “Nature,” “Light,” and “The Radiance of the Everyday,” visitors will sense in the works the roots of the wellbeing-oriented lifestyle that characterizes Sweden today. 2. The gaze of artists who pioneered new forms of expression In the latter half of the 19th century, Swedish painters sought subjects that expressed their nation’s identity and methods of expression worthy of them. Moving away from the Realism and Naturalism they had studied in France, they forged distinctive approaches that emphasized personal emotion and lyrical atmosphere. This exhibition focuses on works from the 1880s to 1915, considered the golden age of Swedish art. 3. An exhibition dedicated to Swedish painting that has recently been attracting worldwide attention! In recent years, large-scale exhibitions have been held in countries such as France and the United States, and Swedish painting has been drawing international attention. With the full cooperation of the Nationalmuseum, Sweden, this exhibition brings together masterpieces of Swedish painting, including works by national painter Carl Larsson and by August Strindberg, also known as a playwright. Through a collection impressive in both quality and quantity, it presents fresh allure in Nordic art.
